The fascinating history of Halloween

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st in American and Irish tradition, has roots that stretch back over 2,000 years. The holiday originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), which was celebrated in what is now Ireland, Great Britain and northern France. The Celts, who lived about 2,000 years ago, began their new year on November 1st. A day that marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. A time that was often associated with death.

The Celts believed that on the night before the New Year, October 31, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead blurred. They celebrated Samhain, believing that the spirits of the dead returned to earth on this night. To honor the dead and ward off evil spirits, the Celts lit large bonfires and wore costumes, often made of animal skins and skulls. When the Roman Empire conquered the Celtic territories in the 40s AD, Samhain merged with two Roman festivals:

Feralia - a day in late October when the Romans honored the passing of the dead.
Pomona - a day in honor of the Roman goddess of fruits and trees.

In the 9th century, Pope Gregory III Christianized November 1 as All Saints' Day to honor all saints. This incorporated many traditions from Samhain and the night before became known as All Hallows Eve , which eventually became Halloween. When Europeans, especially the Irish, emigrated to America in the 19th century, they brought their Halloween traditions with them. In the United States, the holiday developed into the form we know today, with trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns) and dressing up in costumes. During the 20th century, the American version of Halloween spread back to Europe and further out into the world, where it has also become a popular holiday in Sweden since the 1990s.

Artistic expressions in Halloween-themed wall art

Halloween posters offer a unique opportunity to explore darker aesthetics and gothic art forms. From vintage-inspired illustrations reminiscent of classic horror movie posters from the 1920s and 30s to modern minimalist designs featuring stylized symbols like witch hats, cats, and full moons, each poster tells its own spooky story. Our artists have carefully crafted motifs that span a range of styles: classic Halloween iconography with orange and black hues, elegant gothic art in grayscale, and playful, kid-friendly designs that make the holiday accessible to the whole family.

The visual aesthetic of Halloween posters is often based on contrasts – light versus darkness, life versus death, humor versus horror. This duality makes Halloween posters particularly interesting from a design perspective. A well-placed Halloween motif can serve as a dramatic statement piece in an otherwise neutral room, or be complemented with several smaller prints to create a dedicated wall of art that celebrates the darkest night of autumn.
