A poster looks best in a frame. But getting the frame up can often prove to be a surprisingly complicated experience. In the worst case, you end up with a crooked result and unnecessary holes in the wall. Here are some tricks for those who want to succeed right away.
When it comes to hanging, planning and preparation are just as important as the actual execution. Here's a little cheat sheet to get you on the right track.
Getting the tools out
The first step is to get the tools out needed for the actual hanging. There are a number of options to choose from depending on what you plan to hang and how heavy the item in question actually is.
- Pencil for memory markings on the wall.
- Hammer and nail or picture hook. The classic for things that aren't that heavy.
- Self-adhesive suspension. For those who want to avoid holes.
- Drill and plug. If safety and weight capacity are crucial.
If it turns out that what you plan to hang lacks an attachment point, it is also a good idea to look for suitable strips, laces or hook mounts.
Execute the project
In addition to the right tools, choosing the right location is crucial. This applies to both height and where in the room the thing will hang. By following these steps, you are well on your way to a good result.
- Find the location
Spend a little extra time finding the right place. Let yourself be inspired by everything from color matching to spontaneous feeling. In the worst case, of course, you can always regret it later. - Choose the right height
Finding a comfortable height is important if you want to break the habit of constantly looking up or down. Use your eye gauge to get a feel for which height is best. Use a pencil to mark the height. - Mark the center point
Also take the opportunity to find the center point of what you are going to hang. Let the height and center point be symbolized by a cross on the wall. Then you will know exactly where the painting or frame should be attached. - Create the anchor point
Using the tools you have gathered, it is now time to create the actual attachment point. Place the nail, hook, self-adhesive hanger or drill on the cross you created on the wall. - Time for hanging
Now it's time to hang it. Make sure the object you're going to hang has a reliable hanging mechanism and attach it to the wall at the attachment point. If something is crooked, you can often fix it by turning the painting or frame to adjust the center of gravity.
